On Saturday February 21st, 2009

A landmark day at the "Youth can Move the World Symposium"

Marcelino Frost DaCosta & Ground illusionz received the Award for "Social Justice Through arts and culture", which was presented by the one and only, Mayor of Mississauga, Hazel MaCallion! Congratulations to the Ground illusionz crew!

The award created by Sheridan student Kyle Lane represents a high level of acknowledgment towards GI by the City of Mississauga and its Community leaders, as well as an example of inspiration for future generations. Youth across the GTA can have the confidence to know that a group of youth and young adults expressing themselves through Hip-Hop culture can really make a difference sharing with their community,

as long as you never give up.

Along with receiving this important award, the Ground Illusionz also performed a great Saturday morning piece, to liven up the audience of 300 hundred young leadership students and future Mississauga contributors. This showcase presentation was the event opener to a series of inspirational seminars lead by current Mississauga community leaders, including one popular workshop lead my Marcelino Frost DaCosta & Gi entitled, "Social justice through Hip-Hop".

Frost Awarded "Absolute Canadian B-Boy" for 2008

On Dec 6th 2008, at the Canadian Floor Masters 25th Anniversary celebration, FrostFlow from GI was given the annual "Absolute Canadian B-Boy" award.

This award is annually distributed at "Cypher North" by the Stephen "Buddha" Leafloor, front man of the Canada's Oldest B-Boy crew the Canadian Floor Masters.

Frost has been recognized for representing in the Canadian scene for 10 years as not only a competitive dancer with winning titles, but more so for his community work and strong dedication in passing on knowledge. During the award introduction, Buddha had credited Frost with the rebuilding of the Ground illusionz crew and commitment to "inspiring B-Boys with Passion and Pride as to 'Why we do what we do."

At the Same event, Frost also became Champion of the 3 on 3 Crew battle! The battle was won as "1ne Unit Blue Print", alongside his comrades representing: GI & MEC union (1ne Unit Tribe), Conscious Soles Collective, Unity & BluePrintForLife.

BMO "Reaching For Rainbows"

On Nov 14th, The Ground Illusionz Crew threw-down an exclusive choreographed performance for the BMO audience at Old Mill Inn. The Gala night dinner and showcase was a fundraiser for the Charity "reaching for rainbows". The event was a success, congrats to all those who made a financial contribution the event.

The Ground illusionz conducted performances and workshops for over 100 children on Sunday Oct 21st @ T.L. Kennedy S.S. in Mississauga. The Children witnessed the freedom of positive expression through freestyle dance circles known as cyphers. They also had the opportunity to learn some basics with members of Mississauga's legendary crew.

St Joseph's CSS: Host Bboy Class

After a summer full of competitions, performances & showcases, the Ground Illusionz have started a new set of teaching initiatives!

With over 75 students who were interested in learning to break this semester, St. Joseph Catholic secondary school in Mississauga decided to host a b-boy culture class every Tuesday from 2:30P - 4:00P. The school has historically had a large population of dancers and has been holt to past GI performances.

Some of the first members of the Ground Illusionz attended St. Joes were they started dancing in 1997!

Frost Flow & Fresh FX in the Quarter finals at "Rukus In Da Forgotten Boro". The jam took place on Staten Island in New York, New York on Aug 16, 2008. They made it to the top 4 out of 24 crews which entered from across the states.

Battle Style: BATTLE LINE

This brand new concept had never been seen before! Five dancers were put against another team of five, and each member battled head to head. There was a catch. Each team had to choose the order in which they would battle, and creating a line for strategic reasons.

Every round that went by (a round being one dancer followed by a response from another dancer), the judges chose the victor of each round. The loser is out, and must leave the battle, leaving his team with only four remaining members. This continues until one team is out of members and the other team declared the winner.

This past weekend The Ground Illusionz were out in force at Anime North to dance and teach. It's usually a great time, but this year was better than ever. The class had a huge turnout and ended up running overtime with an extensive lesson and a strong cypher to finish things off. The footage here includes a short demo, a variety of basic uprocks and a couple of breakdowns.

The Ground Illusionz crew is an independent, multicultural Hip-Hop collective founded in 99' just outside of the Toronto limits in the hidden gem west-lands of Mississauga. Built during Hip-Hops late 90's revival, GI developed over a year during the turn of the century and quickly became the city's most complete B-Boy team, known for consisting of the most diverse B-Boy & Popping characters with powerful versatility of skills to match. GI has a strong foundation in the original Hip-Hop styles of B-boying/Popping and further representation of other Hip-Hop art elements, such as, Graffiti art, Turntablism and Emceeing through affiliation & collaboration.

Since their establishment in the Spring of 1999, The Ground Illusionz Crew has performed over 300 performances to date performing for crowds of 40 to 400 to 4,000 during: Grand openings, fundraisers, private & corporate parties, concerts, car shows, workshops, art festivals, showcases and public demonstrations. Some highlights include: Opening performances for Melle Mel and the Furious Five for the24th Beatstreet anniversary, Maestro during ManifesTo, album releasefor Slakah The Beatchild, danced for Bad Boy Bill and other world famous Dj's on Electric Circus, Choclair, Kardinal Offishall and the legendary Late Oscar Peterson.

In 2003, GI had become the first ever B-boy/Hip-Hop Group to receive a finalist award at the Mississauga Arts Awards during 2003 and recently 2009 and that's not all…Members of GI have been displayed on film (Honey, Take the Lead),music videos and stage with local artists such as Masia One, Ultamagnus, The Monument works, LODB, Tom Juhas, JSN, and Slakah The Beatchild.GI has also been featured on every major national Canadian Television station including: MUCH, City TV, SPACE, MTV Canada, Global, CBC,CTV, TVO, Rogers, Onmi TV, The comedy network, BPM, seasonal work with CTS and an exclusive performance for international television on Fairchild Chinese TV, with articles for "Inside Mississauga", "Active Mississauga", "Sweat", "Goodlife", "Condo living" & "Pound" magazines.

While attaining some commercial status in the past 11 years, GI have a fresh reputation and street credibility across Canada. Dominating in underground or commercial competitions locally with 30 underground tournament victories in Ontario and contending internationally, while holding championship titles in all categories. GI eventually gained a strong local then national success to become known as one of Canada finest crews. In addition to being a strong competitive and entertaining force, GI has full involvement in community art development projects like:

"The Word Project", "UNITY Charity", "Literacy Through Hip-Hop", "The international Children’s Festival", "ManifesTO", "Blue Print For Life", "Behaviour Urban Arts Festival" and the development of "EY-TECH", Mississauga's first ever Hip-Hop education curriculum implemented through the city. Ground Illusionz has inherited classic Toronto status as a solid crew filled with a mix of style, power, character, fun, unified mentality and originality based on Toronto B-Boy forefathers and legends. After a two-year hiatus during 2004, The Ground Illusionz reformed with a new generation, manifested from community development projects and support from other crews.

Today, one of Toronto's most legendary crews returns with new members across the GTA and support internationally across the world in Taiwan, Germany, Korea & Japan, sharing the same mentality of quality, originality and transcending foundation. As community developers Gi is honoured to be involved with the revolutionary Arctic Canadian social work initiative "Blue Print For life" which brings Hip-Hop culture to remote Indigenous communities across the the northern territories to promote exchange and healing . GI are back in action not only on the battle floor as returning competitive champions but also as advocators of Hip-Hop in Mississauga and Toronto while being examples for the country & now representing around the world.

To maintain and advance our responsibilities as facilitators who advocate urban arts to our community. We also hope to further represent our culture through commissioned shows or support from our municipal, provincial and federal governments to have more solid platform for the future.

Because we’re instructors as well as performers and champions, we hope to maintain leading in skills, concepts, instruction and values to create our own school in the future. This would further aid in helping us to promote our methodology, educate and build bridges between generations. Gi hopes to be a staple in Mississauga & around the GTA as a house hold name, making it better and more accessible for people interested in Hip-Hop to follow their dreams and apply their experience as artists into their carriers. It is our hopes that Gi continues to assist in maintaining the representation of our craft on a sustainable level and all participants involved in Gi or through our workshops grow positively and progressively.

We hope to further our current international membership and continue earning national & international credibility not only as a dance crew that battles, performs and teaches, but also as a multifaceted organization that assists artists through creating experiences which promote and foster a positive and progressive lifestyle.

Well this site has been suffering from a serious lack of posts, but you know what that means! It means I have a serious backlog of stuff to talk about, which is definitely good for people who want to know what we have been up to since September.

To start I have a video of a battle from ROCC (A Mississauga youth group that we performed for). We decided to use a battle format for the show to get all the dancers who ended up coming out a chance to get down.

Kits for Kids

The Ground Illusionz Crew performed in support of the community development initive "Kits for Kids", a month long campaign to provide underprivileged children in the community essential school supplies. Officially kicked off Aug11, the program put on by Sheridian Centre and the Peel District School Board, is aiming to raise funds to provide back-to-school supplies to at least 150 children. The kits will be made up of back-packs, pencils, erasers and other scholastic essentials.

GI gives a warm thank you to Grace Saunders for the work she did to track us down and make sure we were taken care of, and also to Pat Silver for her generous contribution. Peace!

The show included a variety of acts which are affiliated with City Dance Corps (CDC), the studio at which Frost Flow teaches bboy classes. We loved this years show and cant wait for next year.

Last weekend we made our annual appearance at Kalayaan. A festival held at Mississauga Valley Community Centre to celebrate Philippine Independence. It was a great celebration as usual with lots of food and an wide array of performers from around the GTA.

Since the stage was much bigger this year, we were able to perform with a few friends. Our show consisted of several b-boys, a couple of lockers and one popper. The crowd was receptive as usual especially considering the heat.

We'll be back next year!

The Bread & Honey Festival

On Friday June 01, Ground Illusionz headed to the Streetsville Bread & Honey Festival. The weather was nice and the live music was just what we wanted. We rolled out the linoleum and a crowd gathered almost instantly.

It was a great day and a great atmosphere. The vibe from the band got us dancing at our best. A few bboys from the area joined us and we threw down until dark.

Yesterday we ventured all the way to Kitchener to preform at Bluevale Collegiate Institute's multicultural talent show 'A Knight Of Colours'. This Saturday, Ground Illusionz taught the first B-boy workshop at Anime North. The class took place at the Doubletree hotel at Dixon & Martin Grove. The attendees were eager, and caught on to the basics quickly. Next year we hope to do two classes which will again be open to anyone attending the conference.

Ground Illusionz will be performing this Sunday at Crosstown (178 Bathurst @ Queen) to kick off a series of monthly fundraising jams called The One Drop. Sanga Genesis will provide the needle-works for our set which will get started around 9:00P.

The One Drop will bring together Toronto's best Hip Hop acts spanning all elements, leading up to a huge four day long festival this September called Manifesto. You definitely don't want to miss out on this.

Welcome to the first Blog Spot of the Infamous Ground Illusionz Crew. This site is a revival of public information in relation to these local legends of Mississauga. GI has been the 905's Prime B-Boy/FunkStyle representatives since being established in 1999. GI attained an Artist Award for "Best Emerging Artist Group" from the Mississauga Arts Council for the accomplishments within the Toronto underground Hip-Hop scene.

In 2004 the Ground illusionz crew underwent a Hiatus from public performances, due to its members further pursuit of education, independent projects, spiritual journeys and retirement. Continued representation through community development projects and workshops headed by "Frost Flow" have been implemented and continually supported by the City of Mississauga. Today the Ground Illusionz Have returned united with a new generation! We want you updated on our future work.

One of the original founding members of Ground Illusionz, transferred over from the first GI crew "Overload" in 99'. Paolo Contributed to the foundation of the crew, through his incite into the culture and network of the community, work behind the scenes. Paolo Participated in a number of Underground B-Boy battles that made Ground Illusionz the local underground Champions of Toronto from 2000-2003.

Larry Dee has been b-boying since the age of fifthteen starting in 2000. At the age of seventeen Larry wanted to see more of a competitive scene which was more apparent in the Toronto area and apply it to his native city Mississauga. He took initiative by working along side YMCA’s YLC (Youth Leadership Committee) program and launched his first successful “The Sauga Continues” event which recognized MISS and surrounding area as a thriving healthy b-boying scene, he later followed up with another two events. He continued his event planning experience in Toronto with a promotion company called BASSIS with

The meaning of “Fate” refers to the inevitability of a course of events as supposedly predetermined by a higher power or other agency beyond human control.

Basically Fate controls the events in life before they happen. However, I started breaking '06 not knowing anything about dance. With no rhythm, or moves it was hard to picture Michael doing any type of dance, you could say I had two left feet. Although ever since I’ve been practicing, performing, and learning from other people, I’ve only understood the culture of hip hop even more and I have really grown to be a dancer and visual artist. In the spring of 2008 brandon won his First 1 on 1 amateur tournament at "rivergrove CC" in Mississauga and since then has performed with Ground Illusionz during a number of Mississauga festivals including: the Canada Day 08' celebration at the Mississauga Civic centre.

Fresh and (pre)Gi:
My buddy F.T. showed me some basics of breakin (variation of an indian step, 4-5 step, a stabbing freeze) and I just fell in love with it and kept on. In high school I met Jason who helped me with some techniques to improve on power moves, also my brother showed me a tape of Dyzee (who went to the same high school) and I felt the responsibility to pass on the bboy legacy in my high school.

Around the fall of 1998 I was looking for a crew to get down with. The main crew who repped Sauga at this time was Shadow-Mystics but they werent interested in adding a new member, but a group of underdogs (Overload Manuevers) was growing and looking for raw talent =), Paolo introduced me to Knucklez/Swift (Takashi) to set up a Saturday to have a session. In the following weeks, I met the members of Overload: Knuclez/Swift (Takashi), Frost (Marcelino), Crash (Charles), Hausen, and Polo (Paolo) and I became the newest member of Overload Manuevers.

Present and the Future:
Dedicated to the development of the crew and to having a positive influence in the community.
